Ever since opening its doors in 1964, Florida Atlantic University has offered the opportunity for full-time, permanent faculty members to earn tenure and promotion. Tenure and promotion decisions are among the most important decisions made by faculty. These decisions impact the lives of the candidates and the future of Florida Atlantic University.
Tenure at Florida Atlantic University is recognition that the person so honored is an established member of the academic profession, having demonstrated the ability to contribute to a field of knowledge through original work, quality teaching and commitment to service. After six years in probationary status, candidates for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor undergo a rigorous evaluation process that includes careful review by department and college colleagues, the university-wide Promotion and Tenure Committee, the provost and the president. Factors taken into consideration include student and peer feedback on the quality of the candidate's teaching, external review of research, scholarship and creative activity in which the candidate is involved, and the extent and value of the candidate's service to the community, discipline and profession. A positive recommendation for promotion to Associate Professor is required for a positive recommendation for tenure.
Tenured Associate Professors are then eligible to apply for promotion to Professor. While demonstrated merit, not years of service, is the primary factor in determining the case for promotion to Professor, at FAU this normally occurs only after the faculty member has served as an Associate Professor for at least five years. Promotion to the rank of Professor is recognition of demonstrated achievement and distinction over the span of an individual’s academic career, with evidence of longstanding leadership and substantial contributions both within and outside the university.
During the current academic year, 27 FAU faculty members were granted tenure, 26 faculty were promoted to Associate Professor and another 12 were promoted to Professor. "We are very proud of these accomplished professionals and offer them warm congratulations," said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. "Our students are indeed fortunate to have men and women of their caliber as their teachers and mentors."
