What is the Essential Personnel Program?

The University President has established an FAU Essential Personnel program. In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the University may suspend normal operations and classes. If normal activities are suspended, all employees whose positions are designated as essential must report to their campus as directed to prepare for an impending event or assess the University's operations after an event in order to protect the University’s assets.

What is the Essential Personnel Policy?

The essential personnel policy governs the Essential Personnel Program. It provides guidance and procedures to execute the program. For more information please see  The Essential Personnel Policy.  

How is a person added to the Essential Personnel list?

FAU Employees: Complete the  Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form, have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President/Provost. Send completed form to Emergency Management in CO 142.

Non-FAU Employees: Complete the  Non-FAU Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form; have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President/Provost. Send completed form to Emergency Management in CO 142.

How is a person deleted from the Essential Personnel list?

FAU Employees: Complete the  Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form, have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President/Provost. Send completed form to Emergency Management in CO 142.

Non-FAU Employees: Complete the  Non-FAU Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form; have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President/Provost. Send completed form to Emergency Management in CO 142.

How do I update the information on file?

FAU Employees: Complete the  Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form, have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President as appropriate.

Non-FAU Employees: Complete the  Non-FAU Essential Personnel Form.  Print the completed form; have it signed by the appropriate Dean/Director and Vice President/Provost as appropriate.

Prior to designation letters being issued each year, all essential employees undergo a verification process to review and update their information.  In all cases, forms should be sent to Emergency Management in CO 142.

Who determines who is essential?

The Vice Presidents and Provost give the final approval to whom is determined to be essential for their units. 

When are designation letters issued?

Letters are valid from June 1 through May 31. New letters are generally issued during May. Prior to new letters being issued each year, all essential employees from the prior year undergo a verification process to review and update their information. 

Why is an Essential Personnel Designation Letter needed?

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the University may suspend normal operations and classes. Only essential personnel will be allowed on University sites/campuses. The Essential Personnel Designation Letter is verification of this.
