Neal Nghia Nguyen, Ph.D. completed his doctorate in Early Childhood & Special Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2013. His research interests include early childhood education and development, early literacy skills acquisition, effective instructional and collaborative practices, and the personal, educational, and physiological influences of modeling compassion, mindfulness, and altruistic behaviors between teacher educators, specialists, early childhood and special education teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, and young children.
Dr. Nguyen is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). In the past decade, He has taught at several public schools and colleges in Utah, Missouri, Nevada, and Florida as a first-grade teacher, a doctoral teaching assistant, a visiting lecturer, and an assistant professor prior to joining the ESE Department at FAU in the fall of 2016 as a tenure-track faculty member. In 2007, Dr. Nguyen was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at Thacker Elementary School of Osceola County School District, Kissimmee, Florida.
Over the years, Dr. Nguyen has been teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in typical and atypical child development, early literacy skills acquisition, special education, designing & implementing blended curriculum for all young children, positive behavioral support interventions, teacher-family collaborative practices, and assessment for all young children. Dr. Nguyen has been teaching classes at both campuses in Boca Raton and Davie since 2016.
Dr. Nguyen has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented on a variety of topics regarding early childhood education and reading skills of young children at national, state, and local conferences over the past decade. In addition, he has been collaborating with local public schools, principals, and reading specialists in southern Florida to assist young children with or without special needs to enhance their reading abilities.
Dr. Nguyen has been a member of several professional organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Council for Exceptional Children, International Literacy Association, Professors of Literacy and Teacher Education, and the Division of Early Childhood. Dr. Nguyen has also been serving as consulting editor and manuscript & book reviewer for a few peer-reviewed organizations and/or journals such as the NAEYC, Young Children, the Reading Teacher, the Reading Professor, Young Exceptional Children, Journal of Early Intervention, and the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education.
His personal interests include reading, writing, jogging, and sightseeing. He has interests in human and educational rights, educational laws for young children, teachers, and families. He also enjoys the annual road trips with his wife and daughter, and classical music.
In addition, Dr. Nguyen has also been a published Vietnamese poet, a freelance writer, and a member of the Vietnamese Writers Abroad Pen Centre from 1997-2010 (an affiliate of P.E.N. International). He used to write poetry, short stories, and political commentaries for several Vietnamese literary journals in the U.S. and Canada. He has co-authored three published books (poem collections and political commentaries) in Vietnamese during 1997-2008 with other established Vietnamese writers and poets.
