Global Impact: Worldwide Research Changing the Future

Research without Borders

FAU prides itself in being the home to a diverse community of faculty and student researchers, many of whom were born and raised abroad. Coming from foreign countries around the world, they contribute significantly to FAU’s global reach.

Often, these researchers are instrumental in forging new collaborations that explore unique local settings. From the Israeli desert to the capitals of Europe, from the blue waters of the Caribbean to the jungles of Africa and the technology hubs of the Far East, our faculty are making an impact worldwide.

Each collaboration contributes to FAU’s academic excellence and draws a picture of Research without Borders across all science disciplines. They form the nuclei for developing overarching partnerships with international universities that are managed from the Office of Global Partnerships

Office of Global Partnerships

The Office of Global Partnerships aims to extend FAU’s global reach by developing strategic partnerships with international universities and companies that focus on collaborative research projects, exchange of graduate students and postdocs, entrepreneurial initiatives etc. The office assist FAU researchers in identifying potential collaborators, development of funding mechanisms that support collaboration and assistance in the preparation of research proposals.

Europe/Canada/Near East Desk

Traditionally, research collaborations with academy and industry in Europe and the Near East focus on medicine, science and engineering, defense and aerospace as well as ocean and atmospheric sciences. Projects in these disciplines are supported by a range of funding mechanisms and they often focus on innovation and industrial applications.
Israel

Far East/Australia Desk

Several of the countries in this region have emerging economies with rapidly developing national research programs, especially in the fields of technology, engineering and manufacturing, but also in aquaculture and fisheries. Research collaborations are focused around national priorities and they often sponsored through direct state support to universities and research institutes in these countries.

Latin America/Caribbean Desk

Most of the countries in this region are emerging economies and have universities that focus on undergraduate teaching. Programs for advanced degrees are often limited to M.A. or M.Sc. As such, collaborations often have a goal of acquiring new technologies and knowledge through research training. Collaborative projects typically aim at preserving or restoring natural resources or they may focus on human health and disease prevention. Funding mechanisms include those overseen by the Fullbright Fellows program, USAID, USDA and other agencies.
