Learning and Teaching
My teaching philosophy has always been, within the confines of treating individuals with respect, to encourage students to learn more than they thought possible. To this end, I have developed course work that is: (1) highly structured; (2) required a substantial amount of writing; and (3) incorporate quantitative reasoning and skills.
I have had a wide variety of teaching experiences, ranging from large (200+ students) introductory courses, advanced undergraduates, core cores in graduate programs, to advanced seminars at the doctoral level. Introductory courses stress language and terminology and general familiarization with the subject matter. Intermediate level courses stress working with concepts and tools (in both lecture and studio/workshop formats). Advanced courses stress policy formulation and evaluation, and have an institutional focus.
Beyond course work, I have operated on the twin principles of involving students in my own research and involving students in my own professional practice.
Recent innovations in teaching involve using the Internet and distance-education software in virtually all courses (although mostly as a supplement to traditional classroom teaching), experimenting with alternative (time frame) formats, and developing courses taught abroad.
I enjoy supervising theses and independent studies for two reasons: (1) I have some ability as a writer and enjoy teaching writing/thinking skills; and, (2) it challenges me to think through problems that I would not have otherwise initiated or investigated.
