This course is included in the Urban Planning curriculum in order toprovide students with actual planning experience while working for a public or private planning agency. It is one of the most important courses you will take while you are a student in the program. This course involves the student in supervised planning practice and provides opportunities to apply classroom learning in an actual work setting. Ideally, the course should be taken during the summer between your junior and senior year. However, due to individual differences between students, other arrangements can be made. Each student is required to engage in a minimum of 160 contact hours in order to fulfill the requirements of the course.
Students must receive permission from the instructor prior to enrolling in the course. Only students who have a GPA of at least 2.0 and no courses with a grade lower than a "C" in the planning core will be permitted to enroll. While the School of Urban and Regional Planning will make every effort to assist the student in locating an internship position, it is ultimately up to the student to obtain the position. The Urban Planning Bulletin Board in LA 447 usually contains flyers identifying agencies wanting interns.
Once the student has obtained an intemship, it should be reported to the instructor along with the name, address, phone number and position of the students' supervisor. Since the internship is a cooperative learning experience between the student, the course instructor, and the supervisor, it is important that everyone understand and agree to the scope of work that the student is expected to perform. The instructor will, at that time, provide the student with a course syllabus detailing the requirements for completing the internship. A copy of this syllabus will be sent to the student' s supervisor along with a form to return to the instructor evaluating the students performance. Once the student has completed the course requirements and the instructor has received the supervisor' s evaluation, a grade of "Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory" will be sent to the University Registrar.
