The Program

Florida Atlantic University offers a Certificate Program in Ethnic Studies. The primary purpose of the Ethnic Studies Program is to increase understanding of ethnicity and race in the United States. The Ethnic Studies Program is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate students, and is designed to be taken concurrently with the student's major. Students who already hold a baccalaureate degree may pursue the certificate as a nondegree-seeking student or in conjunction with a second bachelor's degree. The Program is especially appealing because courses may be counted toward other general and specific graduation requirements in the student's major. Likewise, courses taken to fulfill other requirements can be applied to the Program in Ethnic Studies.

Being multi-disciplinary, the Ethnic Studies Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to understand the viewpoints and methodologies of various disciplines regarding ethnicity or race. The Program offers scholarly study of distinctive social, political, cultural and historical experiences of ethnic and racial groups in American society. The Program draws upon faculty and courses in the disciplines of history, sociology, education, social work, political science, music, teacher education, Judaic studies, literature, theater, philosophy, communication, languages, geography, and anthropology. In particular, the program emphasizes the experiences, both past and present, of four groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans. In addition, Non-Hispanic White ethnic groups are also examined as they relate to the aforementioned groups.

The courses in the program are selected with care to meet the educational and career needs of students by preparing them to function intellectually in multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-cultural environments. The major goal of the academic curriculum for the Ethnic Studies Program is to make students aware of cultural and racial diversity within the United States through a focused program of scholarly study.

A minimum of 15 credits in ethnic studies courses will enable students to earn a Certificate in Ethnic Studies, which will be awarded upon completion of the program requirements. Students will also receive a transcript notation attesting to completion of the program. Course substitutions may be permitted, depending on student needs and director's approval.
