Contents The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters was named in 1992 to honor the memory of Dorothy F. Schmidt, a generous supporter of the liberal arts and prominent member of a family whose longtime support of higher education has greatly enriched Florida Atlantic University.

Florida Atlantic University opened its doors in 1964, the fifth university in the Florida state university system. It is located in South Florida, close to the tropical beaches of Palm Beach, Broward, and St. Lucie counties. The seven-county region served by the university has a population of more than five million people, offering a diverse community with all of the cultural advantages of a major metropolitan setting. The original campus of this rapidly expanding university is in Boca Raton, on an 850-acre site just three miles from the Atlantic Ocean and midway between Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach.

The Boca Raton campus is the administrative home of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. It is a residential campus, with programs at lower-division and baccalaureate levels in over fifty-four fields, as well as an increasing emphasis on master's and doctoral degree programs.

The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters consists of eleven departments: Anthropology, Communication, English, History, Languages and Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Theatre
, and Visual Arts and Arts History. It also offers a Ph.D. degree in Comparative Studies, an M.A. in Women's Studies and a B.A. in Holocaust and Judaic Studies, as well as a number of interdisciplinary certificate programs including Classical Studies, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Film Studies, Holocaust and Judaic Studies, Latin American Studies, and Women's Studies.
