"Make a habit of regularly observing the universal process
of change; be assiduous in your attention to it, and school
yourself thoroughly in this branch of study; there is
nothing more elevating to the mind"

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, 121-180AD
Roman Emperor and Stoic.

THE ALLOY RESEARCH CENTER AT FAU

Department of Physics

A Brief History

The Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida authorized the establishment of the Alloy Research Center (ARC) as a type IV research center on October 16th 1989. Since then it has offered a focus for scholarship, attracted industry locally and forged international links and collaborations within the field of alloy physics.

The research carried out at the ARC utilizes modern and sophisticated techniques of condensed matter physics with particular emphasis on studying metallic alloys. The Director of the ARC is J.S. Faulkner, who has a well established reputation in the field of condensed matter physics. J.S. Faulkner

Informal meeting of collaborators.
Seated (l to r) Drs. Peter Weinberger (Vienna), Paul Durham (Daresbury), Malcolm Stocks (ORNL) and Balasz Gyorffy (Bristol). Standing (l to r) Drs. Luc Wille, Sam Faulkner and Robin Jordan.

In 1993 the ARC acted as host to a NATO-sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Metallic Alloys: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives". Fifty-five international experts in the field of alloy physics met in Deerfield Beach, Florida from July 16-21. The Proceedings, edited by J.S. Faulkner and R.G. Jordan, were published in 1994 by Kluwer Academic Publishers as part of the NATO ASI series E: Applied Sciences -- Vol. 256.
