COURSE DESCRIPTION: Italy is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Each year millions of visitors spend billions of dollars visiting the country that was, at one time, the single most powerful empire in the world. There are so many reasons for the world to love Italy and all the enchanting and captivating things that make it so alluring, including 2800 years of history, wide-ranging societal and political realities, food, wine, and people that are second to none, art of the highest caliber and stunning scenic backdrop. Join Mary Ann Sorrentino for this four-part lecture series as she discusses her own (sometimes fruitless) search for a “real Italy” and “real Italians” while exploring the diverse country Italy has become. Through art, movies, music, celebrations, traditions and elegance, Italy intoxicates and seduces, and Mary Ann Sorrentino helps us fall in love with Italy all over again.
1. Is there a REAL Italy and a Classic Italian? Understanding Italy's differences-- region by region. Examining the Great Divides that both separate and enrich the diversity that is Italy.
2. Paesani vs Stranieri : Exploring the differences between Italy today and the myths that abound beyond her borders. When the Sopranos don't make La Scala.
3. Cinecitta', Sophia & Bocelli: Reviewing the media and music that fuel the world's longstanding love affair with Italy. Exploring why people fell in love with Italy centuries ago and why the reciprocal love affair continues.
4. Villa Torlonia, Agriturismi and Lesser-Known Treasures: An Overview of Places, Cities and Experiences most tourists never see or do so Italy's fans can get to know her at a fascinating new level.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Ms. Sorrentino is a graduate of Elmira College (Psych/English majors) and did graduate work at the University of Florence. She lived in Florence and has visited Italy annually for many years. After a career as Executive Director of Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island, she taught at the University of Rhode Island in the Communications Faculty and lectured at several universities nationwide. She is a columnist and author and a regular travel writer contributor to Yahoo. She has hosted a radio talk show, which is a three time winner of an Associated Press Award and has written op-eds for the Miami Herald, the Sun Sentinel and many papers across the country.
Fluent in Italian, she considers herself a lifelong learning student of Italian customs and thought. People love to visit Italy and Mary Ann hopes to make their visits more meaningful and enjoyable by unlocking some little known aspects of Italy and Italians.
