Self-Driving Cars, Robot Radiologists, and More:
How Artificial Intelligence is Changing the World Forever

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced significant growth during the past decades, thanks to advancements in software and hardware that have enabled better-than-human performance in many tasks, including visual object recognition and speech understanding. Notable AI successes over human opponents include IBM's Deep Blue victory over chess master Gary Kasparov, IBM's Watson success in the TV game show Jeopardy!, and Google DeepMind's AlphaGo becoming the first computer program to beat a human professional Go player. More recently, the emergence of a machine learning paradigm known as “deep learning” has further energized the field of AI and enabled the development of highly publicized breakthroughs, such as self-driving cars or medical image analysis systems that might replace human radiologists. This lecture will provide an introduction to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and "deep learning" to a non-technical audience. Participants will be introduced to fundamental technical topics and a rich collection of contemporary successful examples of AI in action. Adopting a lighthearted approach, and using a rich set of images and videos, Dr. Marques will present a large number of examples of applications of AI that will broaden your view of the field and allow a better understanding of its foundations, applications, and implications. 


BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Oge Marques is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science and, by courtesy, Professor of Information Technology and Operations Management at the College of Business at Florida Atlantic University. He is a Tau Beta Pi Eminent Engineer, ACM Distinguished Speaker, and the author of more than 100 publications in the area of intelligent processing of visual information, which combines the fields of image processing, computer vision, image retrieval, machine learning, serious games, and human visual perception, including the textbook Practical Image and Video Processing Using MATLAB (Wiley-IEEE Press). Professor Marques is a Senior Member of both the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and a member of the honor societies of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Upsilon Pi Epsilon. He has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in different countries (US, Austria, Brazil, India, Spain, France, and the Netherlands). Dr. Marques has won several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award, American Society for Engineering Education - Southeastern Section (ASEE-SE) (2011) and the Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching Award, Florida Atlantic University, twice (2011 and 2004).
