Heading South: Award Winning South American Cinema
Shelly Isaacs

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: They share a continent and a history of revolution, but in many ways each of the countries of our southern continental neighbor has a culture all their own. Through films they have crafted a narrative rich in character. In this series, we will explore what makes South American cinema so unique, exciting and enriching.

1. The German Doctor: Argentina, 2013 - Based on the true story of an Argentine family who lived with Josef Mengele without knowing his true identity, and of a girl who fell in love with one of the biggest criminals of all time.
2. The Second Mother: Brazil, 2015 - When the estranged daughter of a hard-working live-in housekeeper suddenly appears, she upends the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home, and everything is thrown into disarray.
3. Whisky: Uruguay, 2004 - When his long-lost brother resurfaces, Jacobo, desperate to prove his life has added up to something, looks to scrounge up a wife. He turns to Marta, an employee at his sock factory, with whom he has a prickly relationship.
4. Chinese Take-Out: Argentina, 2011 - Two men who can't communicate, two cultures worlds apart. A close encounter of the human-kind in Buenos Aires.
