Visual Intelligence:
Using Works of Art to Sharpen World Perception

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Research in the fields of vision and cognitive sciences shows that our ability to see the world around us, make sense of what we see, and act upon the information received through the eyes and processed by the brain is a skill that can be improved by training and practice. This presentation will show how we can use visual illusions (and other visual aspects which can be gleaned from selected works of art) to increase our overall ability to perceive the world around us. Participants will be introduced to a series of strategies to increase their visual intelligence, such as: how to pay more attention to relevant details in visual scenes, how to shift perspectives while inspecting an image or video, how to answer fundamental questions (who, what, where, when, why) based on visual information, and how to communicate to other people what we learn from those images. Along the way, we will also address the important aspects of biases, assumptions, and perceptual (subconscious) filters. Adopting a lighthearted and humorous approach and using a rich set of images, videos, and works of art, Dr. Marques will show how we can develop more effective strategies for interpreting the world using our visual sense. 

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Oge Marques is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science and, by courtesy, Professor of Information Technology and Operations Management at the College of Business at Florida Atlantic University. He is a Tau Beta Pi Eminent Engineer, ACM Distinguished Speaker, and the author of more than 100 publications in the area of intelligent processing of visual information, which combines the fields of image processing, computer vision, image retrieval, machine learning, serious games, and human visual perception, including the textbook Practical Image and Video Processing Using MATLAB (Wiley-IEEE Press). Professor Marques is a Senior Member of both the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and a member of the honor societies of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Upsilon Pi Epsilon. He has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in different countries (US, Austria, Brazil, India, Spain, France, and the Netherlands). Dr. Marques has won several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award, American Society for Engineering Education - Southeastern Section (ASEE-SE) (2011) and the Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching Award, Florida Atlantic University, twice (2011 and 2004).
