The Strange and Literary Key West

Taylor Hagood
Lifelong Learning Professorship of Arts and Letter, 2014-2015

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Key West, Florida, is one of the strangest and zaniest places in the United States. It also has a strong literary past. From Ernest Hemingway to Tennessee Williams, this island city (the largest one in the state at the turn of the 20th century) has a rich history of writers, artists, and just plain interesting folks. In this lecture, Taylor Hagood will give an entertaining educational tour of Key West. Not only will this lecture offer interesting stories about the notable people who have populated this colorful city’s past, it will also offer insights into why the island has been so hospitable to the arts, especially writing. These include a delicious tropical climate and atmosphere that foster the imagination, as well as a concentration of strong individuals with creative, independent ways of thinking and a determination to be original. This multimedia event will make use of images and videos of Key West along with lecture.
