America's Moral Failure During the Shoah
Samuel M. Edelman

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In this lecture, the speaker will explore the US moral failure and attempted redemption during the Shoah. We will examine the causes of US and Britian's efforts to close their borders to Jewish immigration in the Evian Conference in 1938 which ultimately led to the Nazi “Final Solution;" US refusal to bomb Auschwitz; a fractionalized, conflicted US Jewish community; and a Christian community divided by either out-right hatred of Jews, indifference to the Jewish community or a desire to rescue Jews from the Nazis. This lecture will also tell the story of how the US Jewish community began to organize; how Henry Morgenthau, Eleanor Roosevelt and Will Rogers worked together to get the War Refugee Board created which had a significant hand in helping save the Jews of Hungary and Bulgaria.
