What's Up, Doc?
The Lives and Careers of Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz
Myrna Goldberger
Recipient of the LLS 1999 Excellence in Teaching Award

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz are both television celebrities, authors, and controversial individuals who began their rise in popular culture on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw and specialist, Dr. Mehmet Oz have been idolized performers whose careers are marked by startling commentary, innovative strategies, and fame that is not limited to a certain age or gender. This lecture will focus on the lives and careers of these two men who have become household names and whose own words have earned critical acclaim, derision and such phrases as "doing more harm than good" and "giving advice that is both simplistic and ineffective." Included in the presentation will be commentary to answer such questions as: Why did these two men achieve the success they did? Would they have had the same results if it had not been for Oprah? What other factors influenced their rise and fall? How do they fit into the culture of celebrity?
