ART in the USA:
American Art - A visual Feast for the World

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The United States of America has a rich and varied artistic history. Beginning with the early settlers and leading to the wealth of creativity happening today, our nation is filled with visual commentary on the times in which artists live. This lecture series will examine the imagery that has enriched both our nation and the world.

1. The Beginnings: From Primitive to Profound.
2. America After the Fall, Painting in the 1930s: Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Georgia O'Keeffe.
3. Galleries Galore: New York as the "Hot bed" of Abstraction and Imagination with Miami Not Far Behind.
4. Inspired by Dance, It's Representation in American Art: Thomas Hart Benton, Barbara Morgan, Elie Nadelman.
5. American Architecture has led the World: From Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Gehry.
6. African-American Art: A Different Vision by Painters, Sculptors, and Photographers: Hale Woodruff, Gordon Parks, and Kerry James Marshall.
7. American Impressionism: Laying the groundwork for much of the avant-garde painting that followed, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Frederick Frieseke, and more.
8. America the Beautiful: Landscape Painting from Yesterday to Today from Frederick Church to Richard Diebenkorn.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Terryl Lawrence earned an EdD in the Arts from Columbia University. She has had numerous exhibitions of her paintings and photographs in New York and Florida, and is the recipient of many awards, including a national grant in the humanities. She wrote the preface to Chaim Potok's Artist in Exile and taught photography, drawing and art history at CW Post College, SUNY Empire State College, FAU, and other public and private institutions. In the past, she was a fashion designer in New York, and has written several children's books. She currently teaches Art History and Mythology at Palm Beach State College and Broward College.
