The years of Harry Truman in the Presidency from 1945-1953 are the years of the evolving Cold War with the Soviet Union, attempts at expansion of domestic reform in the tradition of the New Deal and the internal turmoil of the Second Red Scare known as McCarthyism. We will trace the record of courage and conviction demonstrated by President Truman, who became a giant figure in the Presidency despite early doubts about his ability to replace FDR. We will see his greatness and his shortcomings and the contributions he made to Presidential leadership.
