Jazz - Our National Treasure
Charles Caputo

EVENT DESCRIPTION: You don’t have to be a musician to enjoy jazz, but it helps to understand it's musical basis and to know what to pay attention to as it is performed.  Like hearing good classical music, listening to jazz is not a “passive” activity. This lecture will provide the basics in understanding what goes on behind the scenes as jazz musicians prepare a set for the concert stage or nightclub;  how educated audiences can enjoy the music and develop criteria for assessing the performance; and  the content of the different historical genres that make up this diverse art form. In addition, participants will enjoy a presentation of the most recent software designed to help musicians create jazz compositions and practice their improvisational skills.
