Music Americana
Rediscovering Music On Film
Rod MacDonald
Recipient of the LLS 2012 Distinguished Faculty Award

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Film portrayal of music and musicians is a complex art, often dependent on live performance, but it is also a subject for films with questions to ask and stories to tell, fictional or real. Whether presenting songs from the stage, re-creating the authentic music of a lavish film production, or discovering performing musicians in their element, the artists behind music in films bring a new understanding to the music.
LECTURES:
1. The Songs of Jerry Herman: Mame, Oh Dolly, La Cage Aux Folles. The life and work of this great Broadway composer.
2. Behind The Scenes: All My Loving, Charlie Is My Darling, Monterey Pop. Acclaimed 1960s documentaries reveal the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and other artists.
3. T Bone Burnett: Producing Traditional Music for O Brother, Cold Mountain, Walk The Line, Inside Llewelyn Davis and numerous other roots music films.
4. Rediscovering The Lost: Buena Vista Social Club, Searching For Sugarman. Artists seemingly forgotten by time, restored to the public in brilliant form by documentary work.
