The Devices of Our Familiar World
And How They Work
Maurice Bluestein

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This lecture series will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about everyday technology.  This series will answer questions such as: What's the difference between gasoline and diesel cars? What keeps a 400-ton airplane from falling to earth? How does an air-conditioner turn hot air to cold air? How can computers store so much information? These technologies will be explained using easy to follow illustrations. No mathematical equations will be used.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Maurice Bluestein is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Indiana University - Purdue University, Indianapolis.  He taught for 19 years on the undergraduate and graduate levels, following a 25-year career in the biomedical engineering industry.  He received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from New York University (NYU) and The City College of New York (CCNY-CUNY), respectively. He has authored numerous scientific papers and an engineering textbook. He is the co-developer of the Wind Chill Temperature Chart used by the weather services of the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Bluestein's previous LLS (FAU) topics have included Fun With Numbers, Extreme Weather Explained, Enjoying Casino Games, and The Shape of Our States.
