The Light Fantastic:
Images Real and Images Imagined
Stephen Kowel

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Is seeing believing? Not really! Digital technology produces convincing images of events that never were, nor ever could be. Our brains have always played tricks on us as they process images. Still, sight is a foundational ability, and light provides us with most of our knowledge of the world. In this lecture we discuss light from a physical and perceptual perspective. Dr. Kowel will describe how the human imaging system processes optical illusions, 3-D imagery, holography and exceptional optical effects in nature. The goal is to relate fundamental properties of light to the vision experience and modern imaging technology. Topics include: Optics: lens imaging and limitations, holography, and 3D imagery; Natural displays: rainbows, blue sky, mirages; Optical illusions: geometric puzzles, random-dot stereograms, reverse-rotating spoke wheels; Digital Imaging: pixels, photo-enhancement tools.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:
Dr. Stephen Kowel received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He has held faculty positions at Syracuse University, the University of California, Davis, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the University of Cincinnati, where he also served as Dean of the College of Engineering. He was Director of Research Development for Science and Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 2012 to 2015.  Dr. Kowel has contributed to more than 100 papers and patents in the fields of acousto-optics, electro-optics, liquid crystal adaptive lenses, and 3-D autostereoscopic displays.  Among his professional accomplishments are his appointment as Professor and Dean Emeritus of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, and his election as Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA).
