Feast of the Goat: Rafael Trujillo's Final Days as President-Dictator of the Dominican Republic
EVENT DESCRIPTION: Feast of the Goat (Fiesta del Chivo) is the title of a riveting political thriller, a true-to-life novel written by 2010 Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru. This book chronicles the tragic last year of the Dominican Republic's brutal dictatorship headed by President and Generalissimo Rafael Trujiullo (known as "the Chief") prior to his being gunned down in a night time roadside assassination in 1961. President Trujillo organized and ran a Central American totalitarian regime, micro-managing every detail, working sun up to sun down, overseeing efforts to intimidate, bribe, arrest, kidnap, rape, embezzle, torture, and summarily execute Dominican citizens who resisted his rule. The lecturer will draw upon the vivid imagery of the Llosa novel to illustrate the personality of the Chief as he interacted with his subordinates and his victims, adding historical details based on research of the period. With enhanced powerpoint Mr. Kahn will clarify the dehumanizing effects of authoritarianism, violence, and abuse of power on the individual, that is so brilliantly and starkly illustrated in the tale told by Mario Vargas Llosa.
