Organized Team Sports

Intramural leagues: We participate in the leagues of the towns of Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter. Previous competitive teams were fielded in: Flag football, soccer, co-ed volleyball, and co-ed softball.

Informal sports: With weather permitting, informal team sports were played daily on the multipurpose field on campus. These included flag football, soccer and ultimate Frisbee. Days and times are set each semester.

On campus tourneys: These have included 3 on 3 basketball, ultimate Frisbee and co-ed sand volleyball. These tourneys usually last less than a week, some concluding on the same day.

Individual Fitness Classes

Through arrangements with the Office of Student Life & Recreation and the town of Jupiter’s Wellness programs, Student Government funds individual fitness classes offered at the Jupiter Community Center.

Class sign-ups are at the beginning of each semester and often a winter session is offered. Classes are FREE to all Wilkes Honors college students.

Classes that were offered this past year include: Pilates, Yoga, Aerobic Dance, Stretch and Strengthen, Line Dancing (various levels), Ballet, Latin Dancing, and Swing dancing (various levels).

Occasionally classes will be offered on campus for a specific activity such as Salsa Dancing, Swing, and lessons for games like tennis.

Fit Core Gym

Student Government has arranged for FREE gym memberships during the main academic year (excluding summer terms) with Fit Core gym for enrolled students. Located less than 5 miles from campus near the beach, Fit Core provides state of the art equipment, extensive cardio machines (each with a cable TV above!), free weights and clean locker rooms.

Gym sign-ups are the first 2 weeks each semester. Students are issued a scan-tag (like the ones you may use at grocery stores). Fit Core is open 24 HOURS with use of your scan tag! So if you want to work out at 5AM on a Sunday, power to you.

Directions to Fit Core: Take Donald Ross EAST to US-1. Make a right (south) and go down about a ½ mile to the Seminole Shopping Center and make a right into the center. Fit Core is located on the north side of the center. There are also some places to eat if you’re hungry after your work out or you can head to the beach!

Special Events:

The Recreation agency of SGA and the Student Life & Recreation office sponsor various activities through out the year.

Past events included:

Deep Sea fishing trip
Kickball tourney
Faculty/Staff vs Honors College student softball game (Faculty/Staff won 13-0 in ’04)
Casino Night
FAU Baseball vs St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training
Jupiter Hammerheads minor league baseball
Beach days
First Fridays Cook-Outs at the Pool
Sports and Fitness Day (every February)
Health and Wellness Fair (sponsored by the Health Clinic and Counseling Center)
Biking Trips

The Burrow tourneys:

As part of First Fridays, various games night will be held in the Burrow throughout the year, most often on Fridays. Scheduled for the upcoming year include ping pong, billiards, John Madden football, air hockey, board games, and whatever the new hot game is on PS2 or Xbox. Prizes are often awarded (e.g., the winner of the billiards tourney got his own pool cue. Ping Pong winner got a paddle set and carrying case –Ping Pong is serious business here!)

On-Campus Recreational Facilities

The Pool: The pool is open most days during the academic year and is always staffed by a certified lifeguard.
Spring 2006 hours:
Tuesday & Thursday: 2PM – 7PM
Friday & Saturday: 11AM – 6PM
Sunday: 11 – 7PM

The pool is heated for those few times when we need it. The pool deck has a variety of tables and chairs as well as a hammock and brand new patio loungers so you can kick back and relax while you read your latest class assignment.
The pool isn’t one for doing laps – its more for taking a quick dip, playing some pool volleyball or doing water exercises. There’s also a stereo and you can put in your music requests with the lifeguards.
Special events through out the year also occur at the pool – you’ll end up there for one thing or another so stop by, slap on some SPF30, and relax!

Sand Volleyball/Tennis/Basketball Courts

All three are lighted by timers so if you want to shoot hoops like Allen Iverson, you can play at midnight (there is a group of Honors College students who do!). There are benches by the courts and you can rinse off at the pool locker rooms.

Multipurpose Field: Presently located behind the SR building, this is where the pick-up games occur. There are soccer goals which are moved around depending on the game and the field is often lined by the Recreation agency. In the near future a new multi-purpose field will be completed. This field will have field grass leveled, and maintained year round. The field will also be LIGHTED for evening play. Stay tuned for more details!

Equipment checkout:

A basketball, Frisbee, and soccer ball are available for check-out at the Burrow – just bring your FAU Owl Card. A volleyball is available for check-out at the pool during pool operational hours.

Clubs and Organizations can check-out some of the other equipment such as coolers, tennis racquets, badminton, beach volleyball sets, kick balls, and other cool things.

Off Campus Recreation:

We are blessed with great weather year round which allows for participation almost all the time. You can easily bike to Juno Beach or it’s a 5 minute drive, and fish on its beautiful pier. There are several local and state parks within our area as well, including the Blowing Rocks Preserve and Jonathan Dickinson State Park, as well as the Abacoa Greenway adjacent to campus, an ideal location for trail runs or hikes. There are plenty of 5K’s and other races in the area, and excellent group bicycle rides along the coast each weekend.

Within a few miles of campus are a bowling alley, billiards hall, skate park, playgrounds, jogging trails, tennis and racquetball courts, and camp sites. You also have access to the FAU Boca campus recreation facilities as well. There are plenty of professional sports in the area to watch too: the Florida Marlins, the Miami Heat, the Miami Dolphins, racing at the Moroso track, polo matches in Wellington, and of course FAU Athletics.
