1. What is the difference between an honors course and a regular course?
At the Honors Summer Institute, students take a 3-credit honors college course. Honors courses can be taken only by students who are selected, which helps ensure that the students will be motivated, and encourages a high level of classroom interaction. The course is challenging; for example, students will often read primary source-material rather than simplified summaries, and there is typically substantial writing. But we wouldn't admit a student if we weren't confident they were up to the challenge.
2. If I live nearby, do I still have to stay in the residence halls on campus?
Yes. Much of the learning that takes place at the Honors College occurs outside the classroom, when you interact with your peers and resident assistants, all of whom are Honors College students. Living together with your colleagues for three weeks, you will develop lasting friendships and have the opportunity to explore together the ideas you learn about in the classroom.
3. Can I participate in the Honors Summer Institute and still get time off to
practice occasionally for a sport, hold a job, rehearse a play, or engage in
some other activity unrelated to the Institute?
Unfortunately, no. The Institute is designed to be a full-time, immersion
experience. Not only is three weeks a very short amount of time in which to
complete an upper-level honors course, but all of the other activities of
the Institute are carefully designed to provide a full, intense, and
well-rounded experience. Students who are accepted into the Institute are
expected to give it their full attention and commitment from the moment it
starts until the moment it ends.
4. Are there scholarships?
A limited number of need-based scholarships will be available. For more information and to apply, click here.
5. What is dual enrollment?
Many high school students are eligible to take college courses while completing their high school degree, and have the state pay for the college tuition and lab fees. Further information is available here.
