Kenan Science Honors Scholarship
Receive up to an additional $1,000 in scholarship (based on determined need), academic enrichment opportunities, and up to $4,000 for a summer program.

Download information sheet (pdf)

Details of the Scholarships:

Each Kenan Science Honors Scholar will receive up to $1,000 in additional scholarship money in their junior year and financial support of up to $4,000 to perform a substantive internship or an equivalent educational experience in a related science (e.g., an REU program) in the summer between the junior and senior year. This program must be at least equal to three credit hours.

Opportunities will be available to enhance students' knowledge of science and how science subjects are shared with the public-at-large. This may include, but is not limited to seminars, attendance at conferences, special presentations by guest speakers, and additional research opportunities.

Kenan Science Scholars are expected to participate in a minimum of four service learning sessions in their junior year. They will be enrolled in a one-credit Kenan Science Seminar for the spring semester. Scholars are expected to assist in the recruitment and training of new Scholars and participate in four service learning opportunities in their senior year; if they successfully continue in the program, they will receive a scholarship award of $1,000 for their senior year.

Requirements:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher at the WHC
  • Student must be a Junior.
  • State intention to remain in a science concentration (or continue upper-level course work in science) until graduation
  • Completed (or currently enrolled in) Honors General Chemistry I and II, Honors Organic Chemistry I and II, and Honors Biological Principles, or approved equivalents for these courses.
  • Complete an interview with the selection committee

How to apply:

  • Submit a letter of application, addressing the reason why broader public awareness of scientific methods and issues is important.
  • Have Honors College faculty members submit at least two letters of recommendation on your behalf.
