Goals
Each Kenan Science Honors Scholar will participate in a minimum of four Service Learning Opportunities, currently held in collaboration with
Scripps Florida Education Outreach. The experience will bring together a method of teaching and learning
that combines classroom curriculum with meaningful service in the Palm Beach County community. Students will be trained to participate in approved service learning
activities, such as those developed by the Scripps Florida Education Outreach Office, including:
- The “Introduction to Science” lesson and hands-on exercise are designed to teach a middle school class about our world, what it’s made of and how it works.
It is a chemistry-based lesson but demonstrates the fundamental ties among the four basic sciences (math, chemistry, physics, and biology). This demonstration
is typically 45-60 minutes long.
- The “Science Saturday” course is designed to show sophomore and junior level high school students about the everyday tools of biotechnology scientists through
a hands-on DNA forensics exercise. High school students will process DNA and utilize standard laboratory techniques to solve a “crime.” Science Saturday students
will work at Scripps Florida for 3-4 hours on a designated Saturday.
Details of the Scholarship
Each Kenan Science Honors Scholar will receive up to $1,000 additional scholarship in their junior year and financial support up to $4,000 to perform a substantive internship
or an equivalent educational experience in a related science (e.g., an REU program) in the summer between the junior and senior year. This program must be at least equal to
three semester hours of credit.
Opportunities will be reviewed to enhance students’ knowledge of science and how science subjects are shared with the public-at-large. This may include, but is not limited to
seminars, attendance at conferences, special presentations by guest speakers, additional research opportunities, and the like.

Requirements
Kenan Science Honors Scholars are expected to participate in a minimum of four service learning sessions as described in their junior year. They will be enrolled in a
one-credit Kenan Science Seminar for the spring of 2013. Scholars are expected to assist in the recruitment and training of new Scholars and participate in four service
learning opportunities in their senior year; if they successfully continue in the program, they will receive an award of $1,000 in scholarship for their senior year.
Applicant Requirements
- A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher at the Honors College.
- State intention to remain in a science concentration (or to continue upper-level course work in science) until graduation.
- Have completed (or be currently enrolled in) Honors General Chemistry I and II, Honors Organic Chemistry I and II, and Honors Biological Principles,
or approved equivalents for these courses.
- Complete an interview with the selection committee (to be scheduled after the deadline has passed).
- Submit a letter of application, addressing the reason why broader public awareness of scientific methods and issues is significant.
- Have Honors College faculty members submit at least two letters of recommendation on your behalf.
