Dr. Ely’s work focuses on the late-imperial period of Russian history (c. 1861-1917). He is interested in rural landscape and Russian identity as well as urban space and its relation to public culture. He is currently studying the impact changes within Russia’s metropolitan centers in the 1860s and 1870s had on the political dynamics of the Russian public sphere.
