Beyond the Campus
South Central Florida: A Student's Paradise
The Honors College is located on FAU's MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, Florida. Situated along Florida's famous "Gold Coast," Jupiter boasts near-perfect temperatures year round, breathtaking natural
beauty and an abundance of cultural activities that make it one of the most desirable areas to live in the country. Linger along miles of immaculate, sparkling Atlantic beaches. Fish for deep sea
trophies. Venture inland to water-ski the Intracoastal, sail on a catamaran, kayak to the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, or paddle through an enchanting cypress forest.
Visit Jupiter Island's Blowing Rocks State Park
at high tide to see the spectacular effects of clashing elements. Boating, fishing, surfing, diving are all available right here and enjoyable year-round.
Jupiter is laced with bike and walking paths and dotted with tennis courts and golf courses. The 10,000-acre
Jonathan Dickinson State Park boasts hiking trails through mangrove forests as well as an abundance of wildlife.
Look for crafty alligators, stately Great Blue Herons, and elusive deer. Take a moonlit stroll on the beach during turtle season to watch endangered sea turtles lumber ashore to lay their eggs.
Places to Go, Things to Do
The Honors College campus is situated in the heart of Abacoa, a 2,000-acre residential and business community. Within walking distance of the residence halls,
Abacoa Town Center offers a traditional "Main Street" setting with specialty stores, restaurants, coffee shops, an art gallery and much more. The Abacoa Greenway, adjacent to campus, is an ideal
location for trail runs or hikes. And Abacoa is also home to Roger Dean Stadium, the spring training headquarters for the Miami Marlins and St. Louis
Cardinals, as well as the home of the Jupiter Hammerheads minor league baseball team.
Jupiter is also home to an enviable array of multicultural events, such as the Sharika Festival and Fiesta Maya, sure to delight all. And just ten miles away is downtown
West Palm Beach, home to the Norton Museum of Art, the Kravis Center,
CityPlace and the Flagler Museum.
The Cruzan Amphitheater plays host to a variety of Rock and Alternative concerts and music festivals. On Thursday evenings,
visit Clematis Street where local vendors sell art and food while live bands play a variety of music and people literally dance in the streets.
We are blessed with great weather year round which allows for participation almost all the time. You can easily bike (or it's a 5-minute drive) to
Juno Beach,
fish on its beautiful pier and visit the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
There are plenty of 5K’s and other races in the area, and excellent group bicycle rides along the coast each weekend.
Within a few miles of campus are a bowling alley, billiards hall, Skate Park, playgrounds, jogging trails, tennis and racquetball courts, and camp sites.
You also have access to the FAU Boca campus recreation facilities, and of course FAU Athletics.
There are also plenty of professional sports in the area to watch, including
Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins,
the NBA Champion Miami Heat,
the NFL's Miami Dolphins
and auto racing at both Palm Beach International Raceway
and Homestead Miami Speedway.

Community
At the Wilkes Honors College we value our special responsibility of public service and recognize that this responsibility extends to our local community.
Many of our students, faculty, and staff are actively involved in organizations that promote developmental, urban planning, educational, health, and
scientific endeavors. In addition, during the academic year we offer the Honors College Forum, a series of
Friday talks by Honors College faculty and occasional guest speakers, that is open to the community.
Student Involvement
Horizons Bereavement Center: A student participated in a bereavement camp for children coping with the loss of a parent.
The center is run by the Hospice of the Palm Beaches. The student assisted the licensed clinician in providing psychological services to the children.
Office of the State Attorney: A student worked in the homicide/grand jury division and the division for crimes against children,
shadowing attorneys and attending and assisting with trials.
Norton Museum of Art:A student translated portions of text into Spanish for teachers and tour leaders. The student also
assisted the curator on text panels and helped develop a timeline of the history of the Spanish Empire for public use in the galleries.
Gopher Tortoise Research Project: Gopher tortoises in the Abacoa greenway adjacent to campus and nearby areas have been suffering
an upper respiratory tract disease. A Wilkes Honors college student, working with Professor Jon Moore,
completed research to determine the effects of the disease on the demography of the gopher tortoise population.

Organizations and Groups

Corn Maya is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that was formed by Mesoamerican refugees in the 1980s.
The organization was formed primarily in order to assist thousands of refugees, mostly Mayan indigenous people.
Corn Maya provides immigration services, translation, emergency services, and education for immigrants concerning their rights and responsibilities
in American society. Corn Maya has also sponsored a number of cultural events, including Guatemalan festivals, concerts, and dances.
With the help of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Corn Maya is working for the Jupiter community. Its mission is
to coordinate and cooperate in providing social services to the primarily (though not exclusively) Mayan immigrant community in Jupiter.
Corn Maya works with several organizations in the Jupiter area in order to promote cultural awareness, provide social, legal, and employment services,
advocate for the immigrant community, and promote an appreciation for cultural diversity in Jupiter.
The Lifelong Learning Society, a division of Continuing Education at FAU, is dedicated to enriching the lives of mature students by offering non-credit,
university level courses. Seniors enjoy their own curriculum, along with concerts and entertainment. The LLS program, established in 1980 on the Boca Raton
campus, was implemented in northern Palm Beach County in 1997. In five short years, enrollment has grown from 120 to more than 7,000 students, and there are
now more than 60 courses available. Several Wilkes Honors College faculty have taught life-long learning courses on the MacArthur campus.

communities that meet the principles of smart growth. In this effort we host or collaborate on a variety of community, regional, and state activities.
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) is dedicated to exploring the world's oceans, integrating the science and technology of the sea
with the needs of humankind. Our staff of over 250 includes scientists, engineers, mariners and support personnel. We are involved in research and
education in the marine sciences; biological, chemical, and environmental sciences; marine biomedical sciences; marine mammal conservation; aquaculture;
and ocean engineering. We have a wide variety of educational programs and products to raise public awareness of the marine environment, illustrating how
the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the state of our oceans.
For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of
innovative research and community-based outreach programs. Working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and events like the Komen Race
for the Cure®, the Komen Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants and supporting education,
