SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION FORM

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Selection: The Honors College will admit students whose scholastic performance and abilities demonstrate an active approach to learning and the potential for academic growth. Selection decisions will be based upon the academic record in a college preparatory curriculum, the SAT I or ACT, the candidate’s writing skills as demonstrated through an original writing sample, school and community involvement, liveliness of intellect, capacity of leadership, and the ability to benefit from an honors education.

Academic Preparation: Qualified applicants for admission will have a minimum of 19 academic units in high school, including the following subjects: English (4 units), mathematics (3-4 units), social studies (3-4 units), natural sciences (3-4 units, 2 must contain labs), foreign language (2 units, 2 must be in the same language), and electives (4 units).

Grade Point Average Requirement: Most successful applicants will have a minimum 3.5 weighted grade point average. The Honors College Office of Admissions will calculate the high school grade point average using only grades for academic courses. Honors, Advanced Placement, AICE, and International Baccalaureate courses receive additional weight in the College’s calculation of grade point average. Official high school transcripts must be sent to the Honors College Office of Admissions.

Test Score Requirement: Results from either the SAT I or the ACT are required. The mid 50% ranges for last year’s entering class were 1200-1320 for the SAT I and 27-29 for the ACT.

Writing Sample: The writing sample should be a typed assignment of 500 to 1000 words written for a recent class. The original work with grade, teacher comments, teacher signature, and date must be submitted. The writing sample should reveal a high level of communication and critical thinking. The Honors College prefers that the sample come from an English, social studies or natural science class. These must be mailed to Office of Admissions, Harriet L.
