Sept. 30, 2005: The Wilkes Honors College announces a new Marine Biology Concentration. The new major takes advantage of the College's location in Jupiter, FL just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and an hour south of one of the nation's leading marine biology research centers. Students majoring in Marine Biology have the opportunity to take several classes through a joint program at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, in Fort Pierce, Florida. Faculty advisors for the concentration include Professor of Biology Dr. Jon Moore, who has a
Ph.D. in
Biology from Yale University, was Visiting Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and who studies the distribution of fishes, the biology of deep-sea animals, and biological oceanography; Dr. Susan Richardson,
Affiliated Research Assistant Professor in Biology, who also has a Ph.D. from Yale and has ongoing field
projects in the Indian River Lagoon and Florida Keys, as well as in Belize,
Central America; and Dr. Paul Kirchman, Associate Professor of Biology with a Ph.D. from Emory. Dr. Kirchman
was a post doctoral fellow at the University of Maryland's Center of Marine Biotechnology. Details about the concentration are available online.
