The Florida Atlantic University Debate Team had an excellent first showing of the season at the 11th Annual Star Invitational, hosted by Florida State College of Jacksonville, during Veteran’s Day weekend. Seven members attended – the largest squad ever to represent FAU at an intercollegiate forensics tournament – and competed in a variety of events, including Parliamentary Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, and Persuasive Speaking.
At the tournament’s conclusion, FAU was named the runner-up debate team and the fourth best team overall. In addition, Alan Gray and Philip Olsen were named Parliamentary Debate Champions, and Hannah Gladyszewski was the Top Non-Advancing Novice in Persuasive Speaking. Gray, the President of the Team, was named both the champion and the champion speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Robert Bruton, Georgianne Hallam, Jeff Richman, and Alexa Robinson also competed.
The FAU Debate Team will next compete at the American Collegiate Moot Court Association’s Southeast Regional Tournament at the University of Tampa. Following that is the Marks Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament, hosted by the University of West Florida in Pensacola in January.
