Speaker Tour of the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM)

2006 SEACSM Lecture Tour SEACSM is excited to announce that Catrine Tudor-Locke, Ph.D., FACSM will be our speaker for the 2006 Fall Lecture Tour. She will visit the University of Alabama, Georgia State University, and Florida State University on October 9, 10, and 11, respectively.

Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise and Wellness at Arizona State University. Dr. Tudor-Locke established the Walking Research Laboratory at Arizona State as a conduit for her investigation of the benefits of walking. She has examined the health benefits of walking in a number of populations including individuals with type 2 diabetes, youth, and older adults. She is widely recognized for her work in quantification of physical activity, specifically the use of pedometers as a tool for assessment of walking. She takes a practical, theory-based approach to examining ways to increase walking behavior. Dr. Tudor- Locke is a prolific scholar with nearly 60 publications in refereed journals since 1998. She also has another 8 manuscripts in press, a published book, 4 book chapters, and over 100 scholarly presentations. She has a strong history of extramural support and currently is collaborating on grants totally over $2,000,000.

Dr. Tudor-Locke earned her Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of South Carolina, mentored by Dr. Barbara Ainsworth. Dr. Tudor- Locke, in addition to her faculty responsibilities at Arizona State University, is an Epidemiology Section Editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and is an Adjunct Scholar with the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyles Research Institute.

2005 Fall SEACSM Speaker Selected was in the states of North and South Carolina and Virginia:

Greg Cartee is a Professor in the Division of Kinesiology and Director of the Muscle Biology Laboratory at the University of Michigan. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia (Athens, GA), his M.S. degree from Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas (Austin, TX). His post-doctoral fellowship was at the Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, MO). From 1989 to 2003, he was on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison, WI).

Dr. Cartee has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His major research interests are to understand the cellular mechanisms whereby: 1) exercise, and 2) calorie restriction lead to improved insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle. In addition, he is interested in the influence of age on glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle.

Dr. Cartee is currently an Associate Editor of Exercise and Sports Sciences Reviews. He previously served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Physiology (1999-2001) and was on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences (1998-1999). In 2003, he was a Research Fellow, awarded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Nara, Japan), and in 2002, he was a Wenner-Gren Center Visiting Scientist, at the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden). He is a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and was a member of the American College of Sports Medicine Research Review Committee (1999-2001). He is currently a member of the National Institutes of Health (Respiratory and Applied Physiology Study Section, Skeletal Muscle Biology Special Emphasis Panel).

The title of Greg Cartee's talk will be "Mechanisms for altered insulin signaling and action with exercise or calorie restriction."

Dr. Tanaka has graciously accepted our invitation to be this years lecture speaker and we thank him for this opportunity.

Hiro Tanaka is currently director of the Cardiovascular Aging Laboratory at the University of Texas. He received his bachelor's degree from the International Martial Arts University (Chiba, Japan), his M.S.
