Health Fitness Corporation has exciting opportunities for students wishing to complete their University internship requirement at a Corporate, Community or Hospital based facility. Health Fitness Corporation strives to make the intern experience unique and rewarding and to provide the opportunity to obtain focused experience in your chosen career field. An internship with HFC will provide individuals with exposure and/or experience in most or all of the following areas: facility supervision; program administration; fitness testing; exercise prescription; blood pressure screening; group exercise class instruction; health enhancement programming; facility maintenance; wellness & fitness motivational programming; ergonomics; personal training; health promotion programming; participant record keeping; data analysis; special projects and promotions as assigned by the intern supervisor.

Qualifications: Junior or Senior level student working towards a Baccalaureate or Masters degree in physical education, exercise physiology, kinesiology, recreation, health education, health promotion or related field from an accredited college or university; certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid mandatory; communication skills to instruct and interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals.

Exercise Physiology Internship
Position title: Exercise Physiology Intern

Summary: The exercise physiology intern will assist the Assistant Director, Fitness, direct the fitness laboratory in the George A. Smathers Student Wellness Center at the University of Miami. The intern will experience all aspects of the field including exercise testing, exercise prescription, fitness facility management, and wellness promotion and education. In addition, each intern is required to develop, implement and maintain a semester long project/program related to the field.

Duties include:

  • Assist the Assistant Director, Fitness with laboratory testing (VO2 max, anaerobic threshold, REE, blood chemistry, body composition), fitness assessment, exercise prescription and individual fitness/wellness consultations.
  • Assist with the LIFE Senior Strength Training Program and perform routine functional tests on program participants.
  • Assist with Cardiovascular Wellness Program, a scientifically based exercise program for individuals at risk for heart disease.
  • Assist with managing the facility personal training program. Responsibilities include coordinating personal training clientele and provide continuing education for personal trainers.
  • Complete 40 hours of personal training clinical/special population clients in the Wellness Center
  • Develop exercise/fitness programs for University community.
  • Assist in research projects.
  • Complete a semester-long project targeting program development and/or employee training
  • Create educational materials for Wellness Center patrons.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings and pertinent University events.
  • Complete assignments as required by the Assistant Director, Fitness or the Wellness Director.

Requirements:
This internship is 15 week, 40hr/week commitment with a $3000 stipend. All candidates should be enrolled in their final year of an accredited Exercise science/physiology program and have some experience/course work in exercise testing, fitness assessment and exercise prescription for special populations.       The Duke Diagnostic Lab is a multi-service outpatient diagnostic laboratory that provides non-invasive cardiac, pulmonary, and peripheral vascular assessments. Gain hands-on clinical experience with our diverse population and medical staffing.

    The Associates in Health (AIH) Program is made up of four fitness centers ranging in size from 3,500 to 9,000 square feet and 15 on-site wellness programs across the country.
