Ed Acevedo, PhD.
Ed Acevedo, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair in the Health and Human Performance Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He earned his B.S. in Physical Education with a minor in psychology from Springfield College (1983), his M.A. from the University of Maryland in Exercise Physiology (1985), and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1989). His work has been focused in research and teaching with a major interest in the psychobiology of human performance and health. His primary research focus is on the interaction of mental stress and fitness level on an individual’s health. These interests have led to investigations examining concurrent mental and physical challenges on cardiorespiratory responses and indicators of inflammation and endothelial wall function. A secondary area of interest is focused on hormonal responses to exercise and their relationship to health and human performance. In addition, he has authored or coauthored more than 35 book chapters and articles in refereed journals and he has presented over 75 papers at national and international conferences. His research has been funded by federal and private sources. He is coauthor with Panteleimon Ekkekakis of an edited text published by Human Kinetics entitled, “The Psychobiology of Physical Activity” (2006). He has served as a reviewer for 11 different journals in exercise and sport science and psychobiology. For more than 15 years, he has been an active member in SEACSM and ACSM.
