Course Description:
This activity is designed for pediatricians, family
practitioners, internists, emergency physicians, physical therapists, athletic
trainers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
fitness train- ers, team physicians and orthopaedic surgeons who deal with
athletes in middle school through college. At the completion of this course,
attendees should be able to:
¥Diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and prevent shoulder and
elbow problems in throwing and non-throwing athletes.
¥Diagnose and treat common knee and ankle injuries in
both skeletally immature and skeletally mature athletes.
¥Identify key principles in the prevention and
rehabilitation of athletic injuries in female, pediatric and adolescent
athletes.
¥Make critical decisions regarding appropriate timing
for return to play of the school-aged athlete.
¥Discuss current concepts regarding concussions,
steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, and sports nutrition.
¥Perform appropriate initial histories and physical examinations
for athletes with knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle injuries.
¥Perform functional, sport-specific rehabilitation for
the injured high school and college athlete.
