Mission Statements

SOWSA is dedicated to:

  1. Furthering academic excellence within the BSW and MSW program of the FAU School of Social Work,
  2. Giving social support to the undergraduate and graduate social work student body,
  3. Promoting the NASW Code of Ethics by example,
  4. Increasing the understanding of the Social Work profession as well as promoting a positive image of Social Work as a profession, and
  5. Providing members with a forum to foster advocacy for social change at university and community levels.

SOWSA’s strategic plan for the 2009-2010 school year will be history in the making. We want you to be a part of these plans and bring some of your own ideas!

  • Reach an 80% membership enrollment of all BSW and MSW Students.
  • Raise funds to provide the opportunity for more students to go to NYC and Dublin for Global Service learning.
  • Provide social events such as, Professors & Lattes, Student Clinical Workshops, book clubs, and Social Work parties.
  • Set the stage for BSW and MSW students to travel to Tallahassee for annual Lobby Day. Lobby Day is a learning opportunity, allowing students to put the social work values of social justice and commitment to clients into practice. In particular, students can apply what they are learning in their policy, community, and other classes.
  • SOWSA provides community awareness throughout the month of March by hosting several events to promote National Social Work Month.
  • SOWSA brings social service agency representatives to campus for “Career Day” to promote available jobs and discuss career opportunities for upcoming Social Work graduates.
  • SOWSA provides all social work students with a peer support program. Classes and internships can become overwhelming call our student representatives for support.
