Dr. Michele Hawkins

Michele Hawkins is currently Director and Professor of the Florida Atlantic School of Social Work.  She earned her MSW from the University of Missouri and her Ph.D from Southern Illinois University. Her current research is in social work education, child welfare and minority issues.  Her practice experience includes school social work, legislative policy, couples therapy and work with adults.  She previously was on faculty at the National School of Social Service at Catholic University, Washington, DC and the University of Oregon.

Diane Elias Alperin, Ph.D, LCSW, is Associate Provost of the Boca Raton campus and Professor of Social Work. She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from SUNY Stony Brook, MS from Columbia University and a Ph.D in Social Welfare from Florida International University. Research areas of interest include child and family services, new areas of social work practice, and social work education. She has published a number of articles and is coauthor of two books in these areas. She has been active with several professional and community organizations, and in 1987, was selected Social Worker of the Year by the Florida Chapter of NASW. She is currently President of the Board of Directors of the Maternal Child Family Health Alliance of Palm Beach County.
Beth Amey

Beth Amey received her MSW from Marywood College in Scranton, PA and her BSW from Bloomsburg University, PA. Prof. Amey’s practice experience includes administration and direct services in alternative education programs, community adult programs, and adolescent residential facilities. Prof. Amey is a member of NASW. Prior to this position, she worked for FAU for almost 5 years as a Director of Academic Programs and taught as an adjunct in the School of Social Work. Her teaching and research interests include field education, adult learning, and mezzo social work.

Allan Barsky received his Ph.D in Social Work from the University of Toronto, his MSW from Yeshiva University, and his Juris Doctor from University of Toronto. His teaching and research interests include social work practice theory and skill development, conflict resolution, professional ethics, and substance abuse. His book credits include "Clinicians in Court: A Guide to Subpoenas, Depositions, Testifying and Everything Else You Need to Know," "Conflict Resolution for the Helping Professions," "Interprofessional Practice with Diverse Populations," "Successful Social Work Education: A Student’s Guide," and "Alcohol, Other Drugs and Addictions: A Professional Development Manual for Social Work and the Human Services." Dr. Barsky was awarded the “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” by CAUPA students in 2005, and the “Researcher of the Year – Scholarly and Creative Works” by FAU in 2007.

Dr. Cecilia Campoverde

Cecilia Campoverde earned her MSW in community organization from Adelphi University, New York. She also earned a MA in education and a Ph.D in research and evaluation from Hofstra University, New York. She is a mental health counselor, and serves in a voluntary position as Director of the Guatemalan Project, Inc. a non-profit, tax-exempt public foundation she founded to assist in the development of sustainable micro enterprises for low-income women in Guatemala. Dr. Campoverde co-founded the Latin American Immigrant and Refugee Organization, Inc. and the Guatemalan Maya Quetzal Organization, Inc. She serves as a consultant for those organizations. Further, she is active in several other community organizations. Her research and service interests are in the area of immigration and disabilities.

J.J. Choi is an assistant professor at the School of Social Work, Florida Atlantic University. He earned his BA and MSW from Kyonggi University, Suwon, South Korea. He also received his MSW from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and PhD from the University of Kansas. His areas of interests are social practices and services for youth especially for minorities to promote social justice, restorative justice and cultural diversity. He also has strong interests in utilizing a strengths perspective including solution-focused approach, and exploring a variety of qualitative research methods.

Naelys Diaz earned her MSW and Ph.D. in Social Work from Fordham University in New York and her BA from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. She is a Licensed Social Worker (NY and NJ). She helped develop ADHD and PTSD programs in a child and adolescent outpatient psychiatric hospital. Dr. Diaz has provided clinical social work services to children, adolescents, and their families in outpatient units, partial care programs, and private practice. She has worked in several research projects at the New York Psychiatric Institute and Lehman College. Dr. Diaz’s research interests and publications are in the areas of parental roles, mood disorders, mental health outcomes in minorities (esp. Hispanics), and psychosocial functioning.

Phillip Dybicz received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and his MSW at the University of Houston.  He also earned his clinical licensure (LCSW) in Illinois; practice experience includes community organizing, community mental health, as well as work with children and families in the areas of residential and foster care.  Dr. Dybicz’s research and scholarly interests include social welfare history; cultural and intellectual history of the profession; philosophical issues in social work; postmodern practice innovations—such as the strengths perspective and narrative therapy; cultural competency and diversity; and social justice and policy issues.

Everiste Ambris received his MSW from State University of NY at Buffalo. His practice experience includes alcohol and other drugs with college students; and mental health counseling. Prior to this position he worked at the FAU Counseling Center for 3 years and the University of Louisville Counseling Center for 4 years. Prof. Ambris professional interest includes multicultural issuess, anxiety, depression, and alcohol and other drugs.

A.C. Frizzell received his BSW from the University of South Florida and his MSW from Florida State University. He has ten years of experience as a child welfare caseworker. Prof. Frizzell also has over ten years of experience in child welfare administration and training, including four years as the director of Florida's child welfare training system. His areas of teaching and research interest include child welfare and social welfare policy.

Diane Green received her PhD in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin and her MSW from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Green’s practice experience includes positions as clinical director of a behavioral healthcare system, program administrator in foster care, director of outpatient and intensive outpatient services in a psychiatric hospital, and clinical social work in hospice. Dr. Green’s research has focused on the stress and coping processes for victims of violent and nonviolent crime, the effectiveness of mental health interventions, and grief and loss issues.

Wilma Greenfield received her MSW and DSW from the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as President of the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and Chair of the National PAC of NASW (Political Action for Candidates election). Dr. Greenfield served as Chair and Director of the BSW program for 16 years. She has published in the area of practice issues. Her current research interest includes worksite issues related to couples working together and social work and spirituality.

Elwood R. Hamlin II, earned his MSW from the University of Illinois, Urbana and his PhD from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker/Advanced Clinical Practitioner as well as a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Hamlin’s professional interests and publications are in the areas of domestic violence, military social work, family social work practice, and healthcare.

Wesley Hawkins earned his MSW from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. His Ph.D is in Public Health Education from Southern Illinois University. Previously, Dr. Hawkins was on faculty at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Oregon. Most recently, Dr. Hawkins directed psycho-social interventions in the Clinical Trials Division of the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Dr. Hawkins has numerous publications and grant funding in his research areas of adolescent depression and drug abuse. He presently serves on the Editorial Board, Book Review Editor, and as a reviewer for Children and Youth Services.

Gail Horton received her BSW from Florida Atlantic University, and her MSW and Ph.D in Social Welfare from Florida International University in Miami, FL. She has practiced in the Palm Beach County area for 13 years and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has direct practice experience with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and their families, and with adolescents and adults with substance use problems. She also has administrative experience as Director of the Tree House Program (day treatment) at the Parent-Child Center in W. Palm Beach, FL, and Director of Outpatient and Overlay Services at the Drug Abuse Foundation in Delray Beach, FL. She currently serves on the Advisory Board for Paul’s Place After School Program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray Beach. Her research and scholarly interests include the etiology, prevention and intervention of adolescent and adult drug and alcohol problems.

Bettyanne Hutton, an Adjunct Instructor with FAU, earned a BS degree in Sociology/Psychology at Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee and a MSW from Florida International University. Her early social work practice included medical social work in hospitals and nursing homes. Bettyanne has worked in the areas of child welfare for the last 25 years, both with Children and Families and as a child welfare field trainer for the Professional Development Center. Her special interest areas include adoption and foster parent training and child welfare education. Bettyanne is a member of NASW and North America Council on Adoptable Children. She serves as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Children’s Services Council of Martin County.

Robin Jacobs earned her PhD in Social Welfare from Florida International University, her MSW from San Diego State University, and her bachelor’s in Community Health Education from the University of New Mexico.  Dr. Jacobs has worked on several HIV/AIDS research projects (e.g., Hispanic/Latino drug using adults living with HIV/AIDS, HIV prevention in older adults). She is a research consultant for the Broward County Health Department HIV/AIDS Program Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families Mental Health Program Office. Dr. Jacobs is also a member of HIV/AIDS Minority Network / Broward Community Planning Partnership Hispanic/Latino Advisory Committee. Dr. Jacobs’ publications include scholarly articles and book chapters on evidence based social work practice, cultural adaptation of HIV/AIDS interventions, social work with older lesbians, gay men, and bisexual persons, and HIV/AIDS in women. Her current research interests and projects include HIV/AIDS and STDs, health disparities and unmet needs in oppressed communities, Latino/Hispanic populations, Mexican migrant workers, and culturally relevant health promotion interventions.

Arlene Kaplan earned her MSW and Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Florida International University. She has over twenty two years work experience with public social service work, with an emphasis on child welfare including special needs adoption and foster care. Her academic experience includes teaching practice, research and field education courses at the BSW and MSW levels. She has also served as the Coordinator of an MSW program. Dr. Kaplan is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and serves as a research consultant to the Broward County Public Schools and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County. Her current research interests include field education, child welfare, macro social work, and program evaluation.

Tod Marshall earned his B.A. in Radio & Television Production from Eastern Washington University and is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.  In addition to working at WEVU-TV in Bonita Springs, FL, he has over 12 years of experience in customer service and programming working with Siemens Telecommunications.  His interests are music and genealogy and has been with the School of Social Work since 2005.

Dr. Paulina Martinez earned her PhD in Social Work from Barry University, her MSW from Florida International University and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Houston. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Dr Martinez taught direct practice courses (individuals, families and groups) and human behavior and the social environment courses in the MSW program at California State University, San Bernardino. She used to teach child welfare courses under the Title IV E program and was Assistant Director of Field Education at FAU. She currently teaches Human Behavior and the Social environment and Advanced Practice with Children and Adolescents.

Dr. Martinez’ expertise is in the area of sexual prejudice, homophobia and heterosexism. Having being born in Mexico City, Mexico, her interests are also focused on diversity and vulnerable populations especially Hispanic immigrants. She has extensive experience working with gay men, lesbians bisexual and transgender individuals, minority children and families in child welfare and children's mental health. Her current research involves the needs of older gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people and sexual prejudice in general.

Joy McClellan, LCSW, is an Instructor with the Title IV-E Child Welfare Program, earned a BSW degree from Florida State University and an MSW from Barry University. Her early social work practice included community organization and community mental health. Joy has worked in the areas of children’s mental health, family strengthening and family preservation, and child welfare for the last 15 years. Her special interest areas include system of care work and child welfare education. Joy is a member of NASW. She serves as a board member of the Federation of Families of Palm Beach County.

Keith Platt earned an MSW in clinical social work from Florida State University in 1990 and his BSW degree from Florida Atlantic University in 1989. He is a licensed clinical social worker and worked as a private practice-based psychotherapist from 1992 to 2001. He holds both the ACSW and DCSW designations by The National Association of Social Workers. His agency work experience includes Drug Abuse Treatment Association, Children’s Home Society, Compass, and Center For Family Services. He co-founded HOPE, a psychoeducational support program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth and their families in 1992. This program was the first of its kind in Florida to be granted public funding and has earned state and national attention. Professor Platt has taught at FAU since 1996. He teaches in all sequences in the BSW program and in the practice sequence in the MSW program. His academic and research interests include minority issues, oppression, policy, practice, addictions, spirituality, and sexual orientation issues.

Ellen Ryan completed her Master of Social Work degree at University of Missouri in 1982 and her Ph.D in Health Education from Southern Illinois University in 1988. She has worked in the health and mental health fields as a medical and psychiatric social worker and as a therapist with individuals and families. Dr. Ryan teaches in the Practice sequence at the Master's and Baccalaureate levels. Her current research interests include special needs adoption, as well as health care beliefs, concerns, and practices of recent immigrants.

Patricia M. Scott, MSW is the Statewide Coordinator of the Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Program.  She is located at FAU, the lead university of the contract with the Florida Department of Children & Families, and coordinates the program activities of  Florida Atlantic University, Florida A&M University, Florida International University, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of South Florida,  and University of West Florida.   She earned her undergraduate degree, a BS in Education, at FAU, and her MSW from Florida International University.  She has worked in child welfare in a variety of roles including early interventions, medical foster care, foster parent licensure, and in preservice and in-service training of child welfare staff.
