SOW 3232 Social Welfare Policy and Provisions
An analysis of social welfare policies and provisions within the context of the history of social welfare; income maintenance, housing, employment, health care, child welfare and other special populations.

SOW 3302 Profession of Social Work
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) course. History, values, knowledge and skills of the profession are introduced. The writing for this course is designed to help students learn both discipline specific subject matter and disciplinary ways of thinking through writing.

SOW 4101 Human Behavior and Social Environment I
Prerequisites or corequisites: SOW3232 & SOW3302
Human behavior and development as it is influenced by multiple factors in the social environment through birth, infancy, early childhood, and adolescence.

SOW 4102 Human Behavior and Social Environment II
Prerequisites or corequisites: SOW3232 & SOW3302
Human behavior and development as it is influenced by multiple factors in the social environment from late adolescence to the terminus of life.

SOW 4141 Family Violence
An in-depth analysis of social work and the family, with particular focus on violence within the family. Attention will be given to all areas of abuse and/or neglect, as they affect all members of the family — children, adults, and elders.

SOW 4300 Social Work Practice I
Prerequisites: SOW3232 & SOW3302 ;Prerequisites or  corequisites: SOW 4101 & 4102
Introduction to methods and practice. Basic principles, values, ethics, interviewing skills, problem assessment, solving, intervention, and evaluation

SOW 4313 Social Work Practice II
Prerequisite: SOW 4300
Delineation and study of intervention and changes strategies with individuals, families and small groups.

SOW 4343 Social Work Practice III
Prerequisite: SOW 4300
Delineation and study of intervention and change strategies, with groups and communities. Focus on social action, social planning, community development, political social work and legislative processes.

SOW 4357 Issues in Counseling Women
An in-depth analysis of treatment strategies that have particular relevance to the population of women most likely to become social work clients. Designed as an integrative learning experience, students may examine their own feelings and beliefs about women, as well as become familiar with empirical evidence and clinical interventions.

SOW 4403 Research Methods in Social Work
Introduction to the principles and methods of basic social work research, ethical conduct of research within the context of social work purposes and values. Formulation of problems for study that address the social needs of diverse population groups.

SOW 4510 Field Education in Social Work
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
Open only to social work majors. Supervised experience in a variety of social work settings. Application to be made to Director of Social Work Internships during previous semester. (See student manual for eligibility requirements.) S/U grading.

SOW 4620 Minority Issues and Social Work
Analysis of difference, power, oppression, and multiculturalism relevant to social work practice with various populations who are seen as populations at risk by the profession.

SOW 4643 Social Work with Aging Populations
This course presents the aging experience from a social work perspective, illustrating the bio-psycho-social aging process and its effect on the individual, the family, the community, and national social policy.

SOW 4650 Child Welfare
An in-depth analysis of child welfare policy, programs and practice. Attention will be given to all areas of child welfare, with special emphasis on Florida policies and laws and family focused practice.

SOW 4654 Social Work Practice with Vulnerable Children and Families
Second of two courses for social work students who plan to work with vulnerable children.

SOW 4700 Social Work with Substance Abusers
An overview of prevailing thinking and theories of substance abuse. The course will explore the dominant cultural view and alternative perspectives. Special emphasis on gender roles, family systems, theory and modalities and the social worker’s role.

SOW 4905 Directed Independent Study
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor

SOW 4930 Special Topics in Social Welfare
An in-depth analysis of current social welfare issues, such as social gerontology, legal aspects of social work practice, social work and immigration, etc. Topics vary from semester to semester
