The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) was established in 1956, and since then, AIAS has considerably broadened its scope. AIAS currently represents more than 30,000 students of architecture in more than 155 schools. At most schools with architecture programs, chapters directed by and for students offer local and national programs that compliment the universities' curriculums. The AIAS serves to promote excellence in architectural education, training, and practice, and to foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines. As a student's advocate, the AIAS promotes the quality of education.
The American Institute of Architecture Students provides three categories of membership:
- Student Chapter Memberships are available to all post-secondary schools or departments with architectural curricula and students who join their school's chapter are members of the AIAS;
- Affiliate Memberships are available to professionals and educators in architecture and related fields, as well as to high school students and others interested in the AIAS;
- Partnerships in Education are available to groups within and beyond the field of Architecture that support the AIAS.
Chapter dues are $41.00. Members receive a free subscription to Crit, the Journal of the American Institute of Architecture Students. Published three times a year, the magazine is a record of student work from around North America. In addition, members receive free copies of Charrette, the newsletter published by the National Office of the AIAS and a free issue of The Column, the monthly publication of AIAS-Ft Lauderdale.
Forum is the annual convention of the AIAS which draws over a thousand architecture students and architecture professionals to a different city every year. Forum 2004 will be in New Orleans, and Forum '98 was hosted by AIAS Ft. Lauderdale. Annual trips to the University of Florida, Florida A&M Schools of Architecture, and to Florida Southern College are conducted. Saturday Labs & Lecture Series are offered throughout the year, and the series are open and free.
