FAU Presents 'Hurricane: Threat and
Beauty'
by Dr. Armin Fuchs
BOCA RATON, FL (January 20, 2006)
- Florida Atlantic University presents Dr.
Armin Fuchs, associate professor of Complex Systems
and Brain Sciences at FAU, who will give an
in-depth look at the energy and force of
hurricanes. The presentation will take place
Thursday, January 26 at 3:30 p.m. in the Charles E.
Schmidt Biomedical Center, room 126.
Fuchs will focus on how hurricanes can
release the amount of energy equivalent to 400
hydrogen bombs, as well as the electricity used in
the U.S in a six-month period during a single day.
His 50-minute presentation will include satellite
movies and demonstrations, concentrating on wind
speed, hurricane originations and paths, basic
mechanisms and storm predictions.
Fuchs has been an associate professor at FAU
since 1995. He received his Ph.D. in physics from
Universitat Stuttgart in Germany. Some of his
research interests include application of the
concepts of synergetics and the theory of nonlinear
dynamical systems to behavioral sciences, biology
and medicine. Widder also has co-authored numerous
publications on studies such as rhythmic finger
movements, cortical and cerebral activity in MRIs,
human brain activity and motor behavior.
The Frontiers in Science Spring 2006 Public
Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It
is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of
Science, supported by FAU's Lifelong Learning
Society Endowed Professorship.
