FAU Hosts 'Future Jihad - Who is the
Enemy?'
Lecture by Dr. Walid Phares, Terrorism
Expert, MSNBC Analyst
BOCA RATON, FL (January 17, 2006)
- The lecture "Future Jihad: Who is the
Enemy?" is the first in a series of four lectures
in FAU's Lifelong Learning Society's (LLS) course
taught by Dr. Walid Phares, an international expert
on jihadism and Middle East affairs. "Who is the
Enemy?" will be offered twice on Saturday, January
28 with a morning lecture scheduled at FAU's
Jupiter campus starting at 10 a.m., and an
afternoon lecture on the Boca Raton campus
beginning at 2 p.m.
In his lecture, Phares will define the term
jihad, and why the U.S. and western societies are
its targets. He will discuss the historical roots
of jihadism and terrorism in their historical
context, identify the radical Islamist ideologies,
and explain their development and characteristics.
Phares also will talk about what roles Israel,
Saudi Arabia and Soviet Communism played in the
rise of jihadism and Osama bin Laden. Likewise, key
terrorist organizations and their leaders will be
identified in this first lecture. Phares' recent
book, "Future Jihad," will serve as the course
text. A copy can be purchased the day of the
lecture in the auditorium lobby, and Phares will be
available to autograph copies.
Phares is a senior fellow at the Foundation
for the Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C.
He not only consults with both United States and
foreign governments, but is a regular contributor
on MSNBC, and also appears on CNN, Fox News,
C-Span, al Jazeera, al Hurra, BBC and other media,
providing the latest analysis of terrorist actions
and Middle East events.
Registration for this event is required.
Cost for the entire series is $28 for LLS members
and $38 for nonmembers. Admission at the door is
$10 per lecture and is based on seat availability.
