Lifelong Learning Society in Jupiter
Presents
FAU Frontiers in Scripps Science
JUPITER, FL (December 22, 2005) -
Florida Atlantic University's Lifelong Learning
Society in Jupiter will present the first lecture
in a quarterly series, FAU Frontiers in Scripps
Science, on Friday, January 13, 2006 from 5 - 6
p.m. in the Tamar and Milton Maltz Auditorium at
FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside
Drive, Jupiter. Charles G. Cochrane, M.D., recently
retired professor of immunology, will speak on "The
Power of Pioneers: The Founding of Scripps Research
and the Synthesis of Life-Saving Pulmonary
Surfactant."
Cochrane is one of a small group of
pioneering immunologists who left the University of
Pittsburgh in 1961 for La Jolla, California, to
found a biomedical research institution that, in
his own words, "promoted maximal freedom for
scientists to pursue their individual interests
unfettered by committees and regulations." His
distinguished career included the discovery of a
successful synthesis of pulmonary surfactant, a
product which can save the lives of severely
premature children and extend those of adults
afflicted with acute respiratory distress syndrome
or lethal, active lung injury.
The lecture series, sponsored for Scripps
Florida by Lehman Brothers, is free and open to the
public. A reception follows the lecture from 6 - 7
p.m.
For reservations, call 561-799-8547.
Note: The time previously published for this
event in the LLS catalog was incorrect; the correct
time for the lecture is 5 p.m.
