FAU Hosts Inaugural Research Day

BOCA RATON, FL (October 20, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Division of Research and Graduate Studies hosted their inaugural research day today.

A welcome was provided by FAU President Frank T. Brogan and overview by Dr. Larry Lemanski, Vice President for Research. These remarks were followed by an hour and a half panel discussion moderated by FAU Provost Dr. John Pritchett. The theme of the panel discussion was "Opportunities and Challenges in Industry-University Collaborations." Panel members included -

  • Dr. Russell Kerr, professor of biomedical science at FAU. Kerr has won such prestigious awards as the FAU President's Researcher of the Year Award and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Distinguished Teacher of the Year award. His research interests include biosynthesis of bioactive marine natural products.
  • Dr. John Hogenesch, a neurobiologist at Scripps Florida, is currently a professor of biomedical science at FAU and director of the genome technology department. His research interests include the mammalian circadian clock, RNA dynamics and high throughput cell biology.
  • Dr. Michael Zager, Eminent Scholar in music, founded the commercial music program at FAU with the introduction of the bachelor's degree in music with a major in commercial music. Since then, the master's of arts degree with a concentration in commercial music and the minor in commercial music has been added. Zager is on the Board of Governors of the Florida Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences which runs the GRAMMY® awards.
  • Mr. Pete Martinez, vice president of Business Consulting Services at IBM, has worked thirty years in the information technology industry and was responsible for the consulting team that drove IBM's e-business Strategy and Transformation. Martinez has been awarded the "Engineer of the Year" award by the Association of Cuban Engineers and in 2004 was inducted into the Miami-Dade College Hall of Fame.

Following lunch, research displays and exhibits from all of the FAU colleges present were available for viewing. In addition, the afternoon program was devoted to roundtable discussions, lead by FAU researchers on various subjects - cancer research, research ethics and integrity, issues of aging, science in education, environmental research and disaster management. Dr. Lemanski concluded the day by noting that "FAU is growing in its recognition as an institution of Research excellence." In the spring, the University will hold another Research Day recognizing the research accomplishments of the FAU faculty and students.
