FAU Presents "Yvonne Rainer:
Radical Juxtapositions, 1961-2002"

BOCA RATON, FL (October 14, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's University Galleries will present "Yvonne Rainer: Radical Juxtapositions, 1961-2002" from Friday, November 4, 2005 through Saturday, January 21, 2006 in the Schmidt Center Gallery on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. There will be a film screening and review of the 1974 film "A Film about a Woman Who . . ." with Yvonne Rainer on Wednesday, November 2 at 7 p.m. in the Social Sciences Building, room 250. There will also be an opening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, November 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. with Rainer presenting a lecture at 7:30 p.m. in the lecture hall next to the Schmidt Center Gallery. The exhibition and events are free and open to the public.

Rainer's art spans the worlds of dance, film, performance art and visual art. She has been recognized with numerous nationally and internationally significant distinctions and awards including a 1990 MacArthur Foundation fellowship, two Guggenheim fellowships, seven National Endowment for the Arts awards and the Filmmakers Trophy from the 1991 Sundance Film Festival.

In the early 1960s, Rainer trained in dance with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. Later, she began performing her own choreography and collaborated with other dancers, musicians and visual artists. By the early 1970s, Rainer became recognized as the leading choreographer emerging from the Judson Dance Theater, an experimental venue which often included works developed with a wide range of artists.

The exhibition presents historical documents including journals, vintage photographs, posters and video from the artist's archives; a model of the set from "Inner Appearances," a 1973 performance piece; and two 2002 video works produced for the exhibition, After Many a Summer Dies the Swan: Hybrid and Rainer Variations.

The exhibition was organized by Sid Sachs for the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery of Philadelphia's University of the Arts. The exhibition project is made possible by a grant from the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative, a program funded by the Pew Charitable Trust and Administered by the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. The exhibition's presentation at FAU is made possible by a grant from Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz. University Galleries programs are also supported by Bank of America; The R.A. Ritter Foundation; The Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts; the Palm Beach County Cultural Council; FAU Student Government through student activity fees; and contributions from Friends of the University Galleries.

The Schmidt Center Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. Holidays closings during the Rainer exhibition include November 24-26; and December 17, 2005 through January 5, 2006. Group and class tours are welcome by appointment at other hours.
