FAU Division of Research and Graduate
Studies
Names New Associate Vice President
BOCA RATON, FL (September 6, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Division of Research and Graduate Studies has named Dr. Howard Hanson the new Associate Vice President for the Division of Research and Graduate Studies. He has also been appointed as a professor of Geosciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Hanson will begin at FAU this fall after serving as a technical staff member in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), which is operated by the University of California for the United States Department of Energy.
As associate vice president, Hanson will assist Dr. Larry F. Lemanski, vice president for research and graduate studies, by providing additional leadership to the Division and by serving as an advocate for both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research programs at FAU.
"I think that my experiences in a governmental research setting will bring some added value to the growing research programs at FAU," said Hanson. "That is why I am joining Vice President Lemanski's team. I hope my background will help move FAU forward on its journey to becoming a world-renowned research university."
Until 2002, Hanson served as group
leader of atmospheric and climate sciences, within the Earth
and Environmental Sciences Division at Los Alamos. Most
recently, he worked within the LANL-Directed Research and
Development Program Office, where he provided technical
guidance for the $100 million per year of investments made by
the program.
Hanson, author of over 75 technical contributions and
four novels, is a member of a number of professional societies,
including the American Association for the Advancement of
Science, the American Geophysical Union, the American
Meteorological Society, Sigma Xi and The Oceanography Society.
He became a certified consulting meteorologist of the American
Meteorological Society in 1997 and currently serves as
associate editor of Environmental Science & Policy and on
editorial boards of TheScientificWorld. Hanson holds a Ph.D. in
Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of
Miami.
