FAU TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS FOR
SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS AND IMPROVEMENT

Annual conference to draw more than 1,000 participants from over 70 countries

BOCA RATON, FL (July 5, 2005) - The Center for Educational Leadership at Florida Atlantic University will host the 19th annual International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI) January 3-6 at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. The theme for the 2006 conference is Embracing Diversity: New Challenges for School Effectiveness and Improvement in a Global Learning Society.

Founded in January 1998, the ICSEI was created to provide a forum for researchers, policy makers, school leaders, teachers, district administrators and professional developers to share ideas, to promote research and to encourage practices that enhance the quality and equity of education for all students. ICSEI's goal is to learn from fellow educators through research, dialogue and development opportunities how best to address issues of equity and excellence in schools across contexts as varied as Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, North and South America and Europe.

"Ft. Lauderdale is at the heart of South Florida's vibrant multicultural community and provides the perfect setting to discuss this year's theme," said Dr. Tony Townsend, conference chairman and chair of FAU's Department of Educational Leadership. "This conference will present an opportunity for educators from around the world to learn from each other and take away best practices that can be incorporated in their own work."

Conference participants are invited to consider how research, policy and practice can help schools to embrace diversity in a manner that promotes school improvement and effectiveness in a global learning society, through six key elements:

  • The role of community in a globalized world.
  • Technology, globalization, and diversity.
  • Education reform, policy and practice.
  • Leadership for school effectiveness.
  • The politics of diversity.
  • Effective practices in teaching and learning.
