FAU to Sponsor Workshop on Genocide and Human Rights
BOCA RATON, FL (May 31, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University is sponsoring a workshop on Genocide and Human Rights designed for Lake Worth, Olympic Heights and Jupiter High School students. This workshop is the product of a newly formed partnership between the Palm Beach County schools, the Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education, and Facing History and Ourselves. The conference will emphasize the impact of the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust on the genocides of the last twenty years.
The League for Educational Awareness of the Holocaust (LEAH) is presenting the workshop at Lake Worth High School in West Palm Beach from June 2-3, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The workshop will be lead by Dr. Rose Gatens, director of the Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at FAU, and Dr. Mary Johnson of Facing History and Ourselves. The featured speaker is Dr. Richard Hovannisian, who will be speaking on "How Respect for Human Rights can Serve to Prevent Genocide," one of the foremost authorities on Armenian history and the Armenian genocide. The film "Hotel Rwanda" will also be shown and discussed during the two-day workshop.
LEAH is a nonsectarian, diverse organization that fights religious and racial bigotry by supporting the education of children using the lessons of the Holocaust and other inhumane human events. The ultimate goal is to have a society of respect for all and an appreciation of diversity. LEAH provides educational resources about the Holocaust that will help eliminate prejudice among children.
