FAUs Lifelong Learning Society in Boca Raton Donates $250,000 to FAU College
BOCA RATON, FL (April 1, 2005) Florida Atlantic Universitys Lifelong Learning Society (LLS) in Boca Raton recently announced that it will donate $250,000 to FAUs Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters to create the Lifelong Learning Society Distinguished Professorship in Current Affairs. The College, under the direction of Dean William A. Covino, will oversee distribution of the grant money that will go to faculty to fund research and to present lectures in current affairs.
This is a wonderful gift for the College, said Anthony Tamburri, Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. The grant money will not only benefit our faculty, but also our students and the College as a whole.
The LLS, which is a division of continuing education at FAU, was founded in 1980 to offer non-credit courses to mature students. The University donated the original physical space, and public support has helped the program to grow to over 17,000 students on the Boca Raton campus. The LLS has given back to the university with a building funded by student donations, grants for lectures and programs, funding for faculty to attend conferences and graduate student scholarships. The Current Affairs Professorship is the latest in the LLSs partnership efforts.
We have always had a special relationship with the University, said Ely Meyerson, executive director of the LLS. Since we know that sixty percent of our students are interested in current affairs, it made sense to support the College whose faculty lecture on current affairs.
Meyerson hopes to grow the endowment into a full-time professor of current affairs.
