FAU to Host Education Summit
BOCA RATON, FL (March 9, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University will bring together community leaders to identify and address specific issues related to education as it hosts "One Region, One Voice for Educational Excellence," a Southeast Florida Regional Education Summit, on Sunday, March 13 and Monday, March 14.
The summit will be attended by business and education leaders in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Topics for discussion include defining demonstrated skills set for students graduating from pre-K-20 institutions, as expected by the business community; preparing educators to assure skills of those graduating; and developing a regional platform to assure legislative funding to achieve the outcomes needed. The goal of the summit is to create a "white paper" to assist county leaders in developing regional recommendations for state legislation and funding.
The event will begin Sunday evening with a reception, hosted by FAU President Frank T. Brogan, at the Eleanor R. Baldwin House on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The summit will begin at 8 a.m. on March 14 in the Live Oak Pavilion of FAU's University Center with a welcome from Boca Raton Mayor Steve Abrams, opening remarks from FAU President Frank T. Brogan and remarks from Commissioner John Winn, Florida Department of Education.
